barley is a leucistic sperm whale mer, abnormally small for his species. he was often left in the care of other whales, his own direct family absent from his life - no real figure to claim his mother or father. he had to adapt and learn a lot by himself, refusing to be seen as a liability. his self-sufficiency led him to isolate, however, finding that company was rather difficult to keep.this was what led to his eventual obsession with humans, eventually falling in love with one in his teens. with lack of better judgement, he sacrificed all he could to be with her; with seemingly nothing left to lose, what harm could it do him?
... the girl he'd left the sea for had not loved him back. in pursuing her, he lost himself - countlessly searching the surface world for something to match what he had felt for her, something to devote to. his search brought him to art; something new to direct his passions to, where his time from another life could serve as inspiration for his pieces.as time has passed, however, he's found he's recalled less and less of the waters. art has consumed his time as he's found a way to make a living off it. with his fading memory, however, has he found himself drawn back to the waves once more.
** note; barley can still revert back to his mer-form, but he's forgotten how to change on his own accord. he reverts during stressful circumstances and often spaces out/forgets such instances occur after the fact.this has the potential to change in the future, with given development!
